Dr. Linn Waiters is CEO/Founder Waiters Educational Vision, a non-profit organization focused on improving educational, economical, and skills-based opportunities on the Eastside of San Antonio, Texas. She has an extensive background in K-12 public education, working with at schools in Ohio, Texas, Washington, and the Department of Defense Education. She has an incredible success story of earning four college degrees including a doctorate despite being a victim of domestic violence in her former marriage and coming from an impoverished background. Yet, she still became a success and an example for her children and family. Most notably she has won numerous public speaking awards; taught internationally in countries such as Germany and Turkey; she was a keynote speaker for Black History.events; and has presented at conferences around the country. She is a member of the San Antonio Ladies-Talented Tenth (SALTT). Dr. Channel Young a clinical psychologist in the United States Army based at Fort Hood Army Base. She has been a clinical psychologist for 18 years. Previously, she worked at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. She has an extensive psychology background through working with Multiple clinical disorders to include mental retardation, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. During her years of extensive training, she worked with local youth as a Juvenile Corrections Officer and Public Affairs Coordinator for the Department of Military Affairs. Dr. Young is planning to expand her clinical practice the fields of trauma and health psychology. Her plan is to build her clinical psychology practices to provide consultation to the military. She will integrate PsychoEducational Seminars and the practice of health psychology and women’s issues in clinical psychology.

The PhD Game: Confessions of a Black Academic, is a collection of essays detailing the doctoral journeys of 15 African American doctoral degree holders. Although the National Center for Education Statistics named African American women the most educated group in the United States, the quest for doctoral and other advanced degrees is not easy, and is often not completed.

Antoinette Franklin, the book’s managing editor, explained that she started this project to serve as a source of inspiration to future doctoral holders to complete their advanced education.

“The book is a collection of stories of glory, racism, sexism, and happiness,” she said. “It shares their experiences and how they overcame those misfortunes and achieved the pinnacle of education attainment. The book also discusses the issues facing America’s colleges and universities concerning diversity in the faculty and administration.”
